History and High Rises: An Austin Renovation Collaboration28 Oct Team ATX Life Admin
With the Austin skyline continuing to change with more and more gleaming businesses and high rises dotting the sky, one building in Austin is undergoing some much-needed love in order to preserve the history of the building but match the style of the city.
The old post office on Sixth and Lavaca Street is being incorporated into the design of a new skyscraper, a 36-story Indeed Tower. There’s a lot of work happening inside the historic Claudia Taylor Johnson Hall that sits just next to the Indeed Tower.
For those that love the original design of the historic building, rest assured that many of those features will be preserved. Instead of being a place to mail your letters, the developers are hoping to turn it into a restaurant and retail destination. While there are still talks happening on how the 33,000 square-foot building will be transformed, they want it to be easily accessible and an added amenity to the employees at the Indeed Tower and surrounding businesses.
With Indeed Tower planning to open in April of 2021, Johnson Hall is also facing that same timeline as developers want tenants of the building to have access to the food and beverage options as soon as they move in.
One of the most notable features of this design will be a 17,000 square-foot landscaped plaza that will connect the historic building with the rest of the retail spaces on Seventh Street. Johnson Hall will soon be a pinnacle of what Austin stands for, new technology with the history of the past that bridges the gap and connects lovers of new projects and old designs.
As Austin continuously becomes a cityscape of new buildings and new ideas, it’s becoming more and more important to preserve the buildings with rich backgrounds that speak to a different time period of the area.
It will be exciting to see how this project turns out, and if you’re ever curious about some of the older buildings and historic neighborhoods in Austin, don’t hesitate to reach out to our team! We’re here to answer your questions and direct you to the parts of Austin that fit your style and needs.
